Walter Schreuer

Walter Schreuer, 92, husband of Lesley J. (Finck) Schreuer of Riverbank Lane, Ipswich, died Sunday, December 18, 2011 following a brief illness.

Born in Berlin Germany, June 1, 1919, Walter was the son of the late Felix and Erna (Rothe) Schreuer. Following the death of his father in 1933, he, along with his mother and brother, moved to London because of their opposition to the Nazis. Walter later joined the British war effort.

Walter was educated in England and subsequently married Lesley.  In 1955 they immigrated to the United States and moved to Ipswich in 1960.  Walter worked as an electrical engineer with several inventions to his credit.  He was an avid ham radio operator who also enjoyed tennis and downhill skiing with  family and  friends. He was an enthusiastic cyclist and will be remembered by many for his daily rides around and about Ipswich.

In addition to his wife of 56 years he is survived by a son, Richard J. Schreuer and his wife Nancy Doyle of Hamilton; two daughters, Lucy Schreuer and her husband Richard MacKinnon of Topsfield and Betsy Schreuer and her husband Gary Klein of Medford; five grandchildren, Jack and Vitalyi Schreuer both of Hamilton and Lydia, Rachel and Joshua Klein all of Medford.

A memorial reception will be held on Saturday January 21, 2012, 3 to 5:30 pm at the 1640 Hart House, 15 Linebrook Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan Street B102, Danvers, MA 01923, or Bikes Not Bombs, 284 Armory Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130.
