Stephen Maniates

Stephen "BunBun" Maniates, 76, of High Street, Ipswich, died Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Beverly Hospital after a long illness.

Steve was born and raised in Essex. He was a master mechanic having worked for the former Jones and Vining of Salem and in 1984 began his tenure at Endicott College from which he retired at the age of seventy. He was an avid fisherman and lobsterman and for many years fished the Essex River and Ipswich Bay.

An enthusiastic NASCAR fan, he had a love for stock car racing that was rivaled by few. From the early 1950's and 60's with Bentley Warren Team up until his last ISMA race August 8th at Lee Speedway, if stock cars were racing, Steve was in the stands or in the pits. He always had a smile and a great sense of humor.

He is survived by four children and their spouses, Stephen of Ipswich, Thomas of Beverly, Eddie of Santa Teresa, NM, and Melissa of Sewell, NJ; his partner of twenty years, Patricia Brown of Ipswich; a brother, Louis Maniates of Essex; five grand children and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services under the direction of Whittier-Porter Funeral Home will be private at the convenience of the family.
