Sophia E. (Economopoulos) Soffron, 94, longtime resident of Town
Farm Road, Ipswich, and wife of the late Thomas N. Soffron, died
Wednesday, September 28, 2011 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House,
Danvers, following her brief illness.
Born in Haverhill April 13, 1917, daughter of the late Dimitrios
and Angelina (Matsoukas) Economopoulos, she was raised in
Newburyport , a graduate of Newburyport public schools. As a young
woman she was employed in the local shoe industry in both production
and the modeling of shoes. Married 1947 in the Assumption of the
Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, the Soffron’s made their home and
raised their family on Town Farm Road. Throughout these years she
was an active member of this church she so loved. She participated
in their many events, being the first woman elected to the church
council, singing for many years in the choir and a member of the
Melissa Society.
Mrs. Soffron enjoyed her time maintaining her home, walks, world
travel, having been to Greece several times, and rides with her
son Nicky’s convertible.
She is survived by two sons, Nicholas T. Soffron of Ipswich and
Thomas T. Soffron and his wife Roseanne of Exeter, NH; four
grandchildren, Scott Prisby of Ipswich, Sean Murphy of ME, Sharon
Murphy of MA and Andrea Lee of New York City; a great grandchild; a
brother, George Economos of Maryland; a
sister Maria Creeden of Newburyport and several nephews and nieces.
She was the stepmother of the late Mary Murphy formerly of Ipswich;
and sister of the late Katina Dedes formerly of FL and the late Olga
Cruz formerly of Newburyport.
Her funeral will be held 9 am Monday, October 3, from the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed by a
funeral service 10 am in the Greek Orthodox Church, Lafayette Road,
Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting
hours are Sunday 4 to 7 pm. Interment will be in the New Highland
Cemetery, Ipswich.
