Ruth E. (McIntosh) Blessington

Ruth E. (McIntosh) Blessington, 89, wife of the late James S. Blessington of Birch Lane, died Friday, December 17, 2016, at the Kaplan House, Danvers, following her long illness.

Born in Salem, November 22, 1927, daughter of the late Perley T. and Francesca E. (Manning) McIntosh, she was raised in Marblehead  and was a graduate of Marblehead High School, continuing her education at Burdett College. She soon went on to work in the X-ray department at Lynn Hospital. Ruth was known by many from her years at Blessington Trophies, where she answered the phone and did the bookkeeping for her husband’s family business. Through thick and thin, she was always by Jim’s side. Ruth loved her family and always made sure everyone was taken care of. Many have enjoyed the fruits of her labor at the countless parties the Blessington family hosted at their Birch Lane home. Ruth loved playing cards, particularly Bridge. She played with the same neighborhood Bridge Group for over 40 years. She also loved being part of her Marblehead High School class reunion planning committee and participated in frequent “planning” luncheons. Her hobbies included knitting, crossword puzzles and watching her favorite sports. She was a Boston Bruins season ticket holder for many years and watched the New England Patriots faithfully. She will be remembered by many for her love of lobster, martinis, Frank Sinatra and good old number four, Bobby Orr.

She is survived by a son, Stewart Jay Blessington and his wife, Karen of Ipswich; a daughter, Barbara Ann Bucklin and her fiancé, Dana Hutchins of Ipswich; and Carol Gaffney, companion of her late son, Scott Blessington of Georgetown; five grandchildren, Stewart, Kate and Sarah Blessington, Alexander and Caleb Bucklin; in-laws, William and Marilyn Whalley, Roderick and Debbie Blessington, and Muriel McIntosh; and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Donald Blessington, her infant son and Scott Blessington of Georgetown; and sister of the late Robert McIntosh and Richard McIntosh.

A celebration of her life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2017, at the Ipswich VFW Post #1093, 110 County Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
