Roland F. Chapman

Roland F. Chapman, 81, husband of Barbara H. (Graffum) Chapman of  Exeter, NH, formally of Kimball Avenue, Ipswich, died Friday, August 2, 2013 in the Exeter Hospital following his long illness.

Born in Ipswich May 10, 1932 son of the late Armour H. and Hattie (Short) Chapman he  was raised in Ipswich, a 1952 graduate of the former Whipple High School. Mr. Chapman served with the U.S. Army as a medic and surgical technician during the Korean War, honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant with two Bronze Stars. Following the war and his return to Ipswich in 1954  he married, made his home and raised his family on Kimball Avenue. He was employed as a foreman for the Ipswich Cemetery Department for fifteen years before going to work for the Ipswich Forestry Department from which he retired in 1980.

He enjoyed watching auto racing and watching and playing baseball and football.

Mr. Chapman was a longtime member of the First Church in Ipswich, Ipswich V.F.W. Post #1093 and the Essex County Retiree’s Assoc.

In addition to his wife of fifty-nine years he is survived by three sons, Randy Chapman and his wife Karen of Wells, ME, Gary Chapman and his wife Cynthia of Groveland, Tim Chapman and his wife Lisa of Salisbury; a daughter, Janet Williams of N. Fort Myers, FL; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Armour H. Chapman, Jr. formerly of Ipswich.

His funeral with Military Honors  will be held 10 am, Thursday, August 15  graveside in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Town Farm Road, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
