Richard W. Grant, 74, of Linebrook Road, Ipswich, husband of
Dolores (Devaney) Grant, died Thursday February 26, 2009 in the
Beverly Hospital following a sudden illness.
Born
in Bridgeport, CT May 17, 1934, son of the late William U. and
Maybelle (Sherry) Grant , he was raised in Malden and was a 1952
graduate of Malden Catholic High School. During the final years
of the Korean War he served with the Army Air Corps 82nd
Airborne Division. Following his Honorable Discharge he returned
to continue his education at Merrimac College and the University
of Massachusetts in Boston where he earned his Masters degree
in Education. For many years he taught English at Lynn English
High School and later served as a guidance counselor at Lynn
Vocational Technical School, from which he retired in 1989. He
was an avid tennis player and enjoyed home gardening, gourmet
cooking and as “pops” took special delight in the endeavors and
accomplishments of his two grandsons.
In
addition to his wife of thirty-eight years he is survived by two
daughters, Sherry Murray and her husband Scott of Beverly and
Ellen Zierk and her husband Douglas of Beverly; grandsons Dylan
and Alexander Zierk both of Beverly; two sisters Barbara
Callahan and Nancy Smith both of Grantham, NH and many nephews
and nieces.
His
funeral service will be held Friday March 6 at 1 pm in the
Trinity Episcopal Church, 124 River Road, Topsfield. Family and
friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting hours are Thursday
4 to 8 pm in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street,
Ipswich. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name
may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street,
Framingham, MA 01701
