Terence McSweeney, 81, of Groveland, longtime resident of Payne
Street, Ipswich, husband of the late Frances Ellin (Burns) McSweeney,
died November 25, 2008, at Beverly Hospital following a brief
illness.
Born
in Brattleboro, Vt., September 14, 1927, he was the son of the late
Roland E. McSweeney, M.D. and Martha (Terrien) McSweeney. Raised in
Brattleboro, he was a 1945 graduate of Worcester Academy in
Worcester, Massachusetts and Yale University, Class of 1950. He
served in the U.S. Army in the Medical Corps. After graduation, he
was briefly employed as a bank clerk in Brattleboro, where he worked
until his marriage in 1951. He left banking to become an FBI agent
shortly afterwards. For most of his working life he was employed in
chemical sales and sales management, enjoying a long career with the
E.I. DuPont Company.
The
McSweeneys lived in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Indianapolis, western
Massachusetts and in Delaware before moving to Ipswich in 1963.
After a brief stay in California in the mid 1980s, the McSweeneys
retired to North Carolina before returning to Massachusetts in
December 2005.
Mr.
McSweeney was a former communicant of St. Joseph Church In Ipswich.
He helped found the Barrelstavers Ski Club, and served as an alumni
applicant interviewer for Yale University. In North Carolina he
volunteered in the local schools and participated in a reading for
the blind program. He was a member of the Pinewild Country Club in
Pinehurst, N.C., and was currently a communicant of St. Mary’s
Church in Georgetown.
He
was an avid golfer, enjoyed all sports and faithfully followed the
Red Sox and Patriots.
Mr.
McSweeney is survived by a son, R. Michael McSweeney and his wife,
Nancy Ziemlak, of Reading; four daughters, Deedie Beidler and her
husband, Gary, of Groveland, Ellin McSweeney and Patricia McSweeney,
both of Newburyport and Susan McFayden and her husband, Jody, of
Ajax, Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren, Brian McSweeney of
Reading, Allison Brouillette of South Boston, Tech. Sgt Jason
Brouillette, USAF of Georgia and his wife Jodi, Jessica McFayden and
Michael McFayden, both of Ajax, Ontario, Canada; a great-grandchild,
Brendon Brouillette of Georgia; and many nephews and nieces.
He
was the brother of Martha Conant and her husband John, of Conway and
Jane Wishart and her husband Robert, of Georgetown South Carolina.
His
funeral will be held Monday, December 1, at 10 a.m. from
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed by a
Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Andover
Street, Georgetown. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed.
