Louise W. (Williams)
Sweetser, 97, longtime of
Argilla
Road, Ipswich, died Tuesday June 8, 2010 in the Beverly Hospital
following her brief illness. She was the wife of the late Lawrence
W. Sweetser, with whom she shared
sixty-five years of marriage.
Born in
Taunton May 21, 1913, she
was the daughter of the late Robert W., Jr
and Cordelia (Chase) Williams. She was a
graduate of Taunton High School and Bates College in Lewiston,
Maine. For several years she taught high school
in
Presque Isle, Maine, where
she met her husband.
Married in Bangor in 1939, the Sweetsers
moved to Ipswich in 1943.
She
enjoyed spending time with her family at their summer home in
Dennisport, playing golf, home
gardening, knitting, and treating her family and friends to homemade
desserts. She was a co-owner of the former Window Book Shop in
Ipswich, and for many
years was a girl scout leader. She was a
longtime member of the First Church in Ipswich, a fifty year member
of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Thomas Rogers
Society, the DAR Agawam Chapter, the Cable Hospital Auxiliary, and
for twenty-five years was a trustee of the Ipswich Public Library.
She is
survived by two daughters, Carol S Gilbert and Meredith S.
Sweetser, both of
Oakland, CA, a brother,
Robert W. Williams III of Raynham, and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Eunice Williams, formerly of Raynham.
Her
funeral service will be held Thursday June 17, at
1 pm in the Cowles
Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully
welcomed. Arrangements by the Whittier-Porter
Funeral Home of Ipswich. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions in her name may be made to the Friends of the Ipswich
Public Library, Box 157, Ipswich, MA 01938.
