John Allen, III
John
Allen, III, 77 of Partridgeberry Place, Ipswich, formerly of
Mount Laurel, New Jersey, died Monday March 16, 2009 in his
home following his brief but fierce battle with lung cancer.
Born
in Pittsburgh, PA October 3, 1931, he was the son of the
late John and Alice Mae (Boyle) Allen. Raised in
Pittsburgh, he was a graduate of Pittsburgh public schools
and attended the
University of Pittsburgh and College of Wooster. A third
generation ‘elevator man’ he began his career working in
high steel construction in New York City and later was
self-employed as an elevator consultant.
He was a devoted father and ebullient ‘Pop pop’ to his ten
grandchildren, and any other children who happened to be in
the room.
Mr. Allen was a Korean War veteran, a member of the
Masonic Lodge and member of the Moorestown Field Club of
Moorestown, NJ where he was an honest eighteen handicap.
He is survived by two daughters, Doon Foster and her husband
John of Wilton, CT and Dana Allen of Ipswich, eight
grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald Allen and his wife
Carole of, Steven City, VA and David Allen and his wife
Susan of Kalamazoo, MI and a dear cousin Gail Doorley and
her husband Tom of Wellesley. He was predeceased by two
grandchildren, Evan and Lillie.
A memorial service and burial of his remains will be
held later this summer in Chatham. Memorial
contributions in his name may be made to Stepping Stones
Museum for Children, Matthews Park, 303 West
Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06850. Arrangements under the
direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of
Ipswich.
