Janice Marie (Murray) Farnham

Janice Marie (Murray) Farnham, 77, of Chebacco Terrace, Essex, widow of the late Joseph N. Farnham Jr., died Monday, April 8, 2013 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital, Gloucester following her long illness.

Born in Gloucester June 22, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Edith (Gray) Murray. Janice was a 1953 graduate of Gloucester High School,  where she was a member of the Girls Drill Team for all four years. Following graduation she worked at Addison Gilbert and Salem Hospitals prior to joining her husband at his family’s business, Farnham's Restaurant in Essex. Together they owned and operated the restaurant until 1994, the restaurant's 50th year, when they sold the business due to Mr. Farnham's failing health. In 1990 she and her husband received the Small Business Award, and in 1992 they received the Essex Pride Award.

Following her husband's death in 1995, she became employed by Dr. Curtis Ersing at Beacon Family Medicine in Ipswich, from which she retired in 2007.

Janice enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards with the Sunday Card Group and the Monday Night Card Group, photography, and dining out with friends.

She was a charter member and former president of the Friends of the Essex Council on Aging, a member of the Essex Senior Citizens Club, the Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum and served as president of the Chebacco Terrace Tenant's Assn. She was a longtime member and communicant of St. John the Baptist Church of Essex.

She is survived by her step-family, Joyce, wife of John Kippin of Ipswich, five grandchildren, Robyn, wife of Joseph Lafata of Essex, John Kippin of ME, Jessica, wife of Mark Pelosi of Gloucester, Joseph and James Farnham of CA, six great grandchildren, Anthony and Nicholas Lafata of Essex, CoriLeigh and Samantha Kippin of ME and Harrison and Zachary Pelosi of Gloucester. She is also survived by her god-daughter, Rachel McInnis of Beverly and several cousins, including very close cousin Frances, wife of Nicholas Parisi of Gloucester.

She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Murray and step-son Joseph “Newt” Farnham III of Medford, step-daughter Linda Farnham of Gloucester and cousin Robert Gray of NY.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10 am Saturday, April 20 at St. John the Baptist Church in Essex. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to St. John the Baptist Church, 52 Main Street, Essex, MA 01929, VNA Care Network and Hospice, 8 Angle Street Gloucester, MA 01930, or a charity of your choice.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
