James H. Barnhart, 71, of Plover Hill Road, Ipswich, husband of
Nancy A. (Mariello) Barnhart, died Thursday, January 7, 2010 in the
Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following his long
illness.
Born in Ashley, Ohio August 14, 1938 he was the son of the late Jack
and Donnabelle (Bryant) Barnhart. His family moved to Old Orchard
Beach, Maine when he was young and he attended Old Orchard Beach
public schools, graduating with the Class of 1947. Following high
school, he attended Miami University and the University of Maine and
served with the National Guard. Married on August 20, 1960 in St
Mary’s Church Biddeford, Maine, the Barnharts moved to Ipswich in
1973.
Jim’s airline career started in 1958 when he hitchhiked from Maine
to Alaska. He worked for Wein Alaska Airlines and Northeast
Airlines, then spent many years with Delta Air Lines retiring as
their District Marketing Director in 1993. While working for Delta
in Boston, Jim was involved with the city in many ways. He worked
with the Convention Visitor’s Bureau, where he served as a past
President and received the Distinguished Bostonian Award. He was a
member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Algonquin Club of Boston
and was a past President of the SKAL Club.
Jim
enjoyed spending time with his family, especially on the Fourth of
July in Ipswich. He loved spending time boating and on the beach as
well as traveling the world. He also enjoyed flying his own 1945
Aeronca Champ airplane throughout New England and driving his Harley
Davidson motorcycle from Maine to Cape Cod.
In
addition to his wife Nancy of fifty years he is survived by his
daughter Anna Marie and her husband Andrew of Hopedale, his son
Michael and his wife Patti of Chandler, AZ, his daughter Shannon and
her husband Aron of Valley Village, CA, and his son Danny and his
wife Jessica of Derry, NH. He also leaves his grandchildren Emily,
Hannah and Ethan Lyall of Hopedale, MA, Nicholas and Jackson
Barnhart of Chandler, AZ, Sam and Massimo Pinsky of Valley Village,
CA and Nathan and Joey Barnhart of Derry, NH.
His
funeral will be held Monday, January 11, 8 am from the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed by a
Funeral Mass 9 am in Our Lady of Hope Church, Linebrook Road,
Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting
hours are Sunday 3 to 6 pm. Interment will be in the New Highland
Cemetery, Ipswich. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his
name may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan Street,
Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
