Grey A. Bowden, 81,
of Colonial Drive, Ipswich, died Tuesday September 29, 2015 in the
Pilgrim Rehabilitation Center, Peabody, surrounded by those he loved
the most, following his extended illness.
Born in Eastport,
Maine, May 21, 1934, he was the son of the late Ambrose Grey and Ena
Elaine (Mitchell) Bowden and was raised in Lynn and on Campobello
Island, New Brunswick, Canada. He was a 1952 graduate of Lynn
Classical High School. He continued his education at Salem State
College where he received his BA and Masters in Education. He was a
life-long teacher in the Saugus school system, most recently at the
Belmonte Middle School where he taught science, social studies and
math.
For over forty years
he was a member of Chorus North Shore, a member of the Prison
Choral Ministry, the Annual Kaplan House Memorial Service Choral
Ministry, several area choral and a-capella groups, had served with
the Mass. National Guard and was a long time member of the Ascension
Memorial Church. Grey was an avid fisherman, and was deeply
passionate about the preservation and conservation of the Head
Harbour (East Quoddy) Lightstation on Campobello Island. He also
enjoyed his many choral group travels throughout Europe.
He is survived by
the love of his life Penny Shaner Jones of Ipswich; two sons, B.
Grey Bowden and his partner Matthew Carter of Rowley and Kyle F.
Bowden and his wife Dawn of Newmarket, NH; two daughters, Faith A.
McCulloch and her husband Scott of S. Hamilton and Kristen M. Breen
and her husband Kenneth of Ipswich; eight grandchildren, Christi
Mahan and her husband Ryan of Beverly, Scottie McCulloch of S.
Hamilton and Logan McCulloch of S. Hamilton, Parker and Nathan
Breen both of Ipswich, Avery, Maeve and Fletcher Bowden all of
Newmarket, NH; a brother, John Bowden and his wife Jean of
Rochester, NH; a sister, Evelyn Bowden of Campobello Isl. NB,
Canada; a sister-in-law Sarah Bowden of Hampton, NH and many nephews
and nieces. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of
his four children, Sandra Weinhold of Ipswich; and a very special
maternal aunt, “Aunt Nye” Evelyn Calder of Campobello, NB, Canada.
He was the brother of the late Hal L. Bowden formerly of Hampton,
NH.
His funeral service
will be held 10:30 am Saturday October 24 in the Ascension Memorial
Church, 31 County Street, Ipswich. Family and friends are
