Elizabeth E. “Libby” Arthur

Elizabeth E. “Libby” Arthur, 96, longtime resident of Grant Court, Ipswich, and wife of the late M. Charles Arthur, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the Seaview Retreat, Rowley following her long illness.

Born in the summer kitchen of the Crockett Estate in Ipswich, July 21, 1918 daughter of the late Charles and Bella (McPhail) Earley, she was a member of the last graduating class in the Manning High School in 1936. Married in 1946, the Arthurs soon made their home on Grant Court. Mrs. Arthur was employed as a bookkeeper and office manager at Ipswich Ford, retiring in 1981 after forty three years of service.

“Aunt Libby” as she was known to her wide circle of friends, enjoyed the many years she shared with her husband Charlie, clamming, playing cards, dancing, bicycling, fishing, and boating downriver with friends.They spent many winters in Bradenton, FL.

She was a long term member of the Ipswich Outboard Club, a member of the Ipswich Woman’s Club for over fifty years, served as a Girl Scout Leader, was a member of the Ipswich V.F.W. #1093 Auxiliary, and was a lifelong member of the Ipswich United Methodist Church where she belonged to the DYWYK Club and where for many years she taught Sunday school.

She is survived by nephews, Thomas Gray of Traverse City, MI, Russell Gray of Aurora, CO, Marshall (Skip) Gray of Bloomindale, IL, Charles (Skip)  Dolliver, Jr. of Hamilton and Clinton Newell of Lynn; niece, Sally Ann Bennett of Waltham, and by many great nieces and great nephews. She was the sister of the late Leona Ewing formerly of Ipswich and step-sister the late Dorothy Dolliver formerly of Hamilton.

Her funeral service will be held 10 am Saturday, December 20 in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich, followed by interment in the Locust Grove Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Ipswich Education Foundation, P.O. Box 786, Ipswich, MA 01938, www.ipswichedfoundation.org.
