Edward A. Downs



Edward A. Downs, 88, of Hesperus Circle, Gloucester, husband of the late Alice E. Downs, died Monday, April 16, 2018 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital.

Born in Winchester on January 26, 1930, he was the son of the late Edward F. and Phyllis Downs.Edward was raised in Reading, was a 1947 graduate of Reading High School and a 1949 graduate of Wentworth Institute where he earned an Associate Degree and AP rating as an aircraft mechanic. For the next several years he was employed as a turbo tester at General Electric in Lynn, and later worked as a mechanic at White Trucks in Boston, as a field service rep for Ford Motor Co. in Natick, and was the service manager at Cote Motors of Boston. Most recently and until his retirement, he was the owner and operator of Northeast Ford Marine and Industrial Engines in Ipswich. In his retirement he worked part time at Rule Industries in Gloucester.  His leisure time was spent saltwater fishing and home woodworking. Edward was a member of the American Air Museum in Britain and had attended the Lady of Good Voyage Church of Gloucester.

He is survived by two sons, Jeffrey E. Downs and his wife Lori of N. Reading, and Gregory A. Downs and his wife Sharon of Newbury; two grandchildren, Alycia Downs of N. Reading and Jacqueline Downs of Newbury, and many nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his special friend Alice Nawfel of Gloucester. He was the brother of the late Frances Caparo formerly of Medford, Alice Rudolph of Hampton, NH, Esther Moody of Wells Beach, ME, and Phyllis Downs of Essex.

Private funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Children’s Hospital, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA  02115.
