Edith M. (Newhall)
Steinfeld, 96, longtime of Highland
Street, South Hamilton, died Wednesday December 30, 2009 in the
Blueberry Hill Healthcare Center, Beverly following her brief
illness. She was the wife of the late Charles R.
Steinfeld who died in 1948.
Born in Hamilton
April 12, 1913, daughter of the
late Walter E. and Marion (Day) Newhall, she was a graduate of
Hamilton public schools.
After being
struck by an automobile at the age of nine while sledding, she spent
much of the remainder of her childhood in and out of hospitals until
losing her leg to amputation at the age of seventeen.
Much of her life
was spent caring for others, members of her extended family as well
as several foster children. Most important to her were her family
and friends and she kept up a very active correspondence with many.
She enjoyed entertaining at home
and cooking and baking to share with her family and friends.
She is survived
by two nephews, Robert Newhall of Ipswich and David Newhall of
Beverly and their families as well as many cousins including Ruth L.
Coonrod, John Day and Linda
Coonrod all of Hamilton. She was the
sister of the late Francis A. Newhall formerly of
Beverly and
Alice M. (Newhall) Larrabee formerly of
Louisiana.
Her funeral
service will be held
Thursday, January 7, 2010, 2 pm
graveside in the Hamilton Cemetery. Family and friends are
respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. In lieu of flowers memorial
contributions in her name may be made to the Salvation Army, 93
North St., Salem, MA 01970 and, or the First Congregational Church
of Hamilton, 624 Bay Road, Hamilton, MA 01982.
