Doris L. (Franklin) Freeman

Doris L. (Franklin) Freeman, 90, of Old Point Road, Newburyport, wife of the late Whitman I. Freeman, Jr., died Wednesday, November 30, 2016 in the Brigham Health and Rehabilitation Center, Newburyport following her brief illness.

Born January 5, 1926 in Slatington, PA, daughter of the late Wallace F. and Grace C. (English) Zellner, she was raised in Nutley, NJ, a graduate of public schools.

Married November 7, 1945 in Nutley, NJ they made their home there for several years. They later lived in Garden Grove City, CA and in 1965 they made their home and raised their family on Allen Lane, Ipswich.  She enjoyed knitting for and supporting the Navy Relief Organization She will be remembered as a loving wife and devoted mother of three.    

She is survived by a son, Robert W. Freeman and his wife Jeanne of Newburyport; a daughter, Bonny Bayer of S. Berwick, ME; five grandchildren, Ryan Bayer of VA, Kevin and Katie Bayer both of ME, Amy Napolitano and her husband Justin of Groveland, Chad W. Freeman and his wife Erin of Newburyport; five great grandchildren, Logan Freeman, Cody Savage, Aven Bayer and Aiden and Evan Napolitano. She was the mother of the late Donald A. Freeman formerly of Salem; sister of the late Betty Kane formerly of NJ, Gloria Keller formerly of NM and aunt of the late Peggy Bashore formerly of Westford.

Her funeral service will be held 10 am, Saturday, December 3, graveside in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Town Farm Road, Ipswich.  Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Visiting hours will be Friday 5 to 8 pm in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in her name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
