Donald P. Young

Donald P. Young, 79, of Story Street, Essex, husband of Norma A. (Millett) Young, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport after a hard fought battle.

Born in Gloucester on January 25, 1932, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Shea) Young.  His mother passed away when he was very young, and  he was raised by his father and stepmother, the late Myra T. (Harris) Young.  Raised in Gloucester, he was a 1951 graduate of Gloucester High School. Donald joined the Army National Guard in 1949 and remained active in it for thirteen years. He moved to Essex in 1954 when he married his high school sweetheart Norma.

During his working years he was employed by the United Shoe Machinery Corporation in Beverly, the Town of Essex, and Lepage’s Company in Gloucester from which he retired in 1994.  His favorite pastime was fishing.  He was very proud of his children, and lit up at the mere mention of his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of almost fifty-seven years, Donald is survived by three children, son Timothy D. Young and his wife Susan of Brunswick, Maine, son Richard S. Young of Rowley, and daughter Kimberly Young Johnson of Danvers; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Laura Young of Islesboro and Harpswell, Maine respectively, Seth Young of Manchester-by-the-Sea and Maxwell and Charles Johnson both of Danvers; and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his siblings Margaret Oreto, Patricia Costa, and James Young.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, July 13, 2011 from 5 to 7 PM at Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed.
