Donald P. Young, 79, of Story Street,
Essex, husband of Norma A. (Millett) Young, died peacefully on
Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport
after a hard fought battle.
Born in Gloucester on January 25,
1932, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Shea) Young. His
mother passed away when he was very young, and he was raised by his
father and stepmother, the late Myra T. (Harris) Young. Raised in
Gloucester, he was a 1951 graduate of Gloucester High School. Donald
joined the Army National Guard in 1949 and remained active in it for
thirteen years. He moved to
Essex in 1954 when he married his high school sweetheart Norma.
During his working years he was
employed by the United Shoe Machinery Corporation in Beverly, the
Town of Essex, and Lepage’s Company in Gloucester from which he
retired in 1994. His favorite pastime was fishing. He was very
proud of his children, and lit up at the mere mention of his
grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of almost
fifty-seven years, Donald is survived by three children, son Timothy
D. Young and his wife Susan of Brunswick, Maine, son Richard S.
Young of Rowley, and daughter Kimberly Young Johnson of Danvers;
five grandchildren, Jennifer and Laura Young of Islesboro and
Harpswell, Maine respectively, Seth Young of Manchester-by-the-Sea
and Maxwell and Charles Johnson both of Danvers; and several nieces
and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Margaret Oreto,
Patricia Costa, and James Young.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday, July
13, 2011 from 5 to 7 PM at Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High
Street, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. In
lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be made to
