Daniel D. Callahan

Daniel
David Callahan, 61, husband of Kristen L. (Eddy) Callahan of Elm
Street, died Friday, August 12, 2011 as a result of an Ipswich motor
vehicle accident. The community is in shock at having lost such a good
man and at such a young age.
Born in
Salem, February 23, 1950 son of the late William D. and Stella (Lickewicz)
Callahan, he had lived in Peabody until his marriage in 1974, when the
Callahans moved to Ipswich to make a home and raise a family. Daniel
had worked as an electro-mechanical assembler before coming to work at
EBSCO Publishing in Ipswich where he was currently employed. Most people
there knew him as Dan, the man with the basset hound who walked all
over town often visiting EBSCO with his beloved canine Slater. Dan was
a fan of many sports including BMX racing, hockey and football. He was
also a naturalist and amateur birder. Famous for his stories, he would
laugh whenever he could, and improved the lives of others with his love
and understanding of the human condition. His goal was always to leave
folks either laughing or feeling a bit better than they had. In his
position at EBSCO he set people up in their respective workstations,
taking into account the particular wishes of each while keeping his
trained eye on ergonomics. Dan was an avid supporter of the Ipswich
Public Library where he borrowed many a cookbook or CD. He loved to cook
for family and was always thinking about the next recipe. Celebrations
with his children and grandchildren always included spicy foods and
funky music. The blues were his favorite. He will be sadly missed by
his wife, children, grandchildren and all who knew him for his morning
walks to the train station.
In addition
to his wife Kristen of thirty-six years he is survived by a son, Michael
I. Callahan and his wife Amy of Amesbury; two daughters, Mary I.
Callahan and her companion Lance A. Gilbert, and Emily E. LeMieux and
her husband Peter; three grandchildren, Tyler, Matthew and Lillian
Callahan all of Ipswich and two sisters, Elizabeth Anthony of Peabody
and Virginia Dunford and her husband Arthur of Burlington and a brother
William Callahan and his wife Donna of Windham, NH.
Visiting
hours will be held Wednesday, August 17, 4 to 8 pm in the
Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. Family and friends
are respectfully welcomed. A memorial service will be scheduled at a
later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be
made to: PKD Foundation
