Charles Alan Laughton

Charles Alan Laughton, 73, husband of Ellen F. (Woods) Laughton of  Northridge Road, died Monday, April 4, 2016  in the Beverly Hospital following his sudden illness.

Born in Lowell, June 29, 1942, son and second child of the late Courtland A. “Cal”  and Frances H. (Hoelzel) Laughton, he was raised in Lowell, a 1960 graduate of Chelmsford High School. He continued his studies and graduated from Cornell University in 1964. Following graduation he served as a Lieutenant  JG in the U.S. Navy aboard  USS Newport News. For the many years until his retirement he was the owner and operator of Laughton Garden Center and Nursery in Chelmsford. He was a member and currently the  Commander of the  V.F.W. Ipswich Post #1093, a member the  American Legion Ipswich Post #80 , the Navy League and  the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors  Association. He will be remembered as a  loving husband, father and grandfather, a devoted brother, and a true blue friend. In addition to his wife of forty-seven years he is survived by a son, Christopher A. Laughton and his wife Chendan of Enfield, CT; two daughters, Carrie Stackhouse and her husband Scott of Glenside, PA, and Cindy Laughton Quimby of Ipswich; three grandchildren, Charles and John Quimby both of Ipswich, Ella Stackhouse of PA and a sister, Judith Geisler of Westport.

His funeral service will be held 10 am Saturday April 9 in the Ascension Memorial Church, 31 County Street, Ipswich followed by interment with Naval Honors in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Ipswich V.F.W. Post #1093 Scholarship Fund, 110 County Road, Ipswich, MA 01938.
