Carole Celine MacIntyre Ashe

Carole Celine MacIntyre Ashe, 84, of Island Park Road, Ipswich, died Tuesday, January 2, 2017 in the Kaplan Family Hospice, Danvers following her long illness.

Carole was born in New York City on February 15, 1933 daughter of the late George S. and Laura M. (Hazel) MacIntyre. She was raised in Hartford CT with her beloved siblings Lorraine, Trudy and Scot. She was a freckled roller skating tomboy in her youth and a refined and striking beauty throughout her life. Carole was a seasoned and bright professional. A registered nurse for over sixty years, she studied at the University of Zurich and The Hartford School of Nursing. Carole started young, skipping from the second to fourth grade and excelling at a life of continual learning and teaching, from charge nurse at Hartford Hospital in her twenties to leading a cracker jack team of nursing professionals at Shaughnessy Rehab. She had cared for uncounted private duty patients in her later years all over the North Shore. Carole was the consummate caregiver and friend. She became a family member to each of her patients and their families and gave them perhaps the rarest gift of quiet and skillful care, dignity, compassion and comfort. Her work as a nurse, along with her family and friends, were her passion and vocation holding herself to a gold standard. Lucky are we to have been loved and cared for by her. She cut a mean rug and was a fun loving companion and fellow traveler.

Carole was an involved and well known member of her Ipswich community. She could be seen any given Sunday morning during her children's school years ferrying a large station wagon packed with hockey players to their games. Blizzard or not it was “ice time”. An avid New England sports fan of the most dedicated order, her greatest delight in her later years was watching the Red Sox, the Bruins, the Celtics and the Patriots with her sports crazy sons and grandsons. The food was always good and the kitchen was always warm. Her love of reading and skill at knitting are legendary in the clan.

Carole is survived by her five loving children; a daughter, Laura E. Ashe and her companion Orville Giddings of Ipswich, four sons, Andrew M. Ashe and his wife Ann of VA, Harry J. Ashe and his wife Kim Cordima of Ipswich, James B. Ashe and his companion Mila Regondola of HI, and Thomas S, Ashe and his wife Rhonda Jacobs of KY, her cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Cody, Cameron, Jacob and  Luke, nephews and nieces including Andriena Bonura of NYC, and  her former husband  Dr. Harry J. Ashe of HI.  She was the sister of the late Scott Macintyre and Trudy MacIntyre both formerly of NYC and Lorraine Sontheim formerly of Switzerland.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to: Kaplan Family Hospice, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923. Private arrangements are under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
