Carol Eleanore Ramirez

Carol Eleanore Ramirez (Pickering) died peacefully in her Hamilton home, surrounded by family on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at the age of 80.

Born on December 17, 1933 in Malden, Massachusetts, Carol was the daughter of Ernest Pickering and Mary Belle Glancy (Farmiloe).  A graduate of Malden High School, Carol excelled academically and was an active performer in the choir and in school plays. In the early 1950s, she worked in Boston and then made a transcontinental journey to California, where she studied at a junior college.  She married Hugo Ramirez Restrepo, an engineering graduate of MIT and Harvard, and the couple lived in Bogota, Colombia in the late 1950s and 1960s. By 1970, Carol returned to Massachusetts and moved to Hamilton to raise her six children, all of whom graduated from Hamilton Wenham High School.

Studying under Robert Pelletier and Isabel Hickey, Carol was a Sidereal Astrologer who had her own newspaper column, taught astrology classes in Lynn and gave readings in Salem. She was an avid genealogist, a voracious reader and a talented watercolor and pen and ink artist. After her children were grown, Carol completed coursework at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, studied microbiology at Endicott College and worked at the Ralph Waldo Emerson Inn in Rockport, MA. She was admired for her encyclopedic knowledge, foreword thinking in issues related to the environment, health, and education, as well as for her wry humor and adventurous spirit.

She loved to travel and embarked on many excursions with her family throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, and Ireland. Strong, intelligent, loyal and courageous, she worked tirelessly to keep her family together. She had a great capacity to enjoy life to the fullest, even under hardship.  She was appreciated for her respect of wildlife and nature, her generosity and profound sense of empathy. She repeatedly offered her home and help to others; she was also an advocate of veterans, especially her uncle Eddie Glancy, who served in World War II.

She is survived by her brother James T. Johnson, Jr. of Los Osos, CA and Karen. A Denum of Pembroke, MA.  Of her six children, she is predeceased by her son Alejandro H. Ramirez.

Her two sons are Daniel F. Ramirez of Austin, TX and David M. Ramirez and his wife Brenda Cirone of Woburn, MA.  Her three daughters are Elizabeth A. Ramirez de Simon of Hamilton, MA, Sandra M. Ramirez and her husband Robert Harding of Chelmsford, MA and Luz Elena Ramirez and her partner Matthew Habich of Claremont, CA. Her four grandchildren are Macy A. Webster Ramirez of Austin, TX, Aleister T. R. Simon of the United States Marine Corps, Arianna D. Ramirez of Woburn, MA and Ian M. Habich Ramirez of Claremont, CA; her nieces are April Denum MacAskill, Heather Denum Lally and Sherry Wright

McLaughlin. She will be missed by lifelong friend Marie Frizzi of Melrose, MA and family friend Larry Goodwin of Rockport, MA.

The Ramirez family wishes to thank Carol’s caregivers for their attentiveness and compassion.
