Alice L. (Hughes) Thanos
Alice L. (Hughes) Thanos, 88, beloved wife of the late Anthony S. Thanos,
formerly of Broadway Avenue, Ipswich, died Sunday, October 18, 2020 in
Webster at Rye in Rye, NH following her long illness.
Born in Medford on
January 12, 1932 Alice was one of the two children of the late Chester and
Winifred (Nickerson) Hughes. She was first raised on Cape Sable Island,
Nova Scotia and later in Medford where she was a 1948 graduate of Medford
High School. For many years Alice was employed as a secretary at Mass.
Bonding Insurance Co. in Boston.
Married in 1971, she and Anthony first lived on Howe Street before
making their home for the next forty years on Broadway, Ipswich. Most
recently she had been employed as the Activity Director at the former
Caldwell Rehabilitation Home in Ipswich.
Alice enjoyed her
many travels and travel adventures with her daughter Pam. They had
travelled most of the states, including Alaska, the Canadian Provinces and
the Bahama Islands. During these travels Alice was quick to ride a horse,
slide down a zip line over a raging surf and parasail.
She loved her time with grandchildren, her many pets, and singing,
having sung weekly on a North Shore Christian radio program.
In addition to her
daughter Pam and her husband Leslie Killam of Exeter, NH, she is survived
by four grandchildren, Anthony Thanos
and his wife Lucy of Haverhill, Shannon O’Bryon of Salem, NH, Paul
Smith of Plaistow, NH, Zhi Liang of Beverly; three great grandchildren,
Jayson and Nicholas Thanos both of Heverhill, Mia O’Bryon of Salem, NH; a
brother, Gerald Hughes and his wife Phyllis of CT and many nephews and
nieces.
Visiting hours for
family and friends will be held Thursday 4 to 6 pm in the Whittier-Porter
Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich. Her funeral service will be held 11
am graveside Tuesday, October 27, in the New Highland Cemetery, Ipswich.
During this period of Covid-19 we request those in attendance wear facial
masks and exercise social distancing. Memorial contributions in her name
may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
